SITUATION:

*Sigh*, I couldn’t have picked a tougher week to return to this feature. Image has a massive haul of awesome titles (as usual), and IDW and Dark Horse have more than their fair share as well. Luckily, I was able to spot a few books by badass creators, one with one of my all-time favorite fictional characters, and one whose theme I simply could not ignore.

So, without further ado, here are the ADVANCE SCOUT picks for March 5, 2014!

1. “Veil #1″

Greg Rucka is one of comics’ best-known names at the moment. With Lazarus consistently knocking it out of the park for Image Comics, Rucka isn’t content to rest on his laurels. Teaming with artist Toni Fezjula, Rucka looks to explore a more mysterious story in this outing, with a plot that deals with “A beautiful girl [who] wakes up in an abandoned subway station with no memory of how she got there.”

Between Rucka’s highly developed skill at scripting dynamic female protagonists and Fezjula’s eerie pencils, this book should be both a wild ride to read and a gorgeous viewing experience.

2. “Starlight #1″

Mark Millar is back in a big way this week, with the first installment in what he calls his “Expanded MillarWorld Universe™.”

Capeless staffer Mike Sains penned a complete Advance Review of this title, awarding it an astounding 10/10, and he goes into great detail as to why this book is worth your time and money. Give it a read here.

3. “Tales of Honor #1″

David Weber’s Honor Harrington series is one of the most epic collections of naval science fiction to ever see print. Featuring a lead character who is, for all intents and purposes, a female sci-fi re-imagining of the classic Horatio Hornblower, the graphic adaptation is being penned by Top Cow head honcho Matt Hawkins (Think Tank) and will set the stage for a forthcoming feature film.

If you like your badass ladies and their killing-machine pet tree-cats, you will not want to miss this.

4. “Archer and Armstrong #18″

With the first major arc of the series in the rear-view mirror, and coming off a #0 issue which told the lost origin of Armstrong himself, Valiant launches into this title’s first major crossover, pitting its heroes against the bloodthirsty killers of H.A.R.D. Corps in the first installment of the Mission: Improbable event.

Archer and Armstrong has been, in my honest opinion, one of the most solid books to emerge from Valiant’s wildly successful relaunch. Seeing how it plays within the context of the larger Valiant universe will be a huge step for the series, so this one is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

5. “Evil Empire #1″

How do totalitarian states rise to power? Would some people welcome the security offered by giving up all freedom?

These are just a couple of the questions writer Max Bemis looks to explore in his second outing with Boom! Studios.

This is a title that was tailor-made for us here at Capeless, and as any longtime reader can tell you, any title which explores the inner workings of the human mind as it relates to systems of government and control is something we will pay very close attention to, as should you.

ANALYSIS:

I’m sorry. I really am. I’m sure you probably planned to buy a bunch of really awesome books that you’d been reading for a while, and here I am telling you about ones you probably had no clue were coming out but will be almost certainly awesome.

I guess I’m just an agent for the consumer machine which fuels the global capitalist economy.

We all have to do our part, I suppose…
